When I discovered Cobb's first book in the USS Cunningham series, 'Choosers of the Slain' I was ecstatic. What a great book. I immediately read books, 2,3, and 4. But not long into book 4, I was absolutely astounded at how he completely ruined the character of the Captain, Amanda Garrett. Completely trashed her. Was he bored? Did he do it for a laugh? Did he decide he needed to take a new tack? If so, he certainly succeeded. This book, unlike the first three which are great, is absolutely indisputably the most boneheaded direction I've ever seen a 'franchise' make. It's right up there with The New Coke.If you really want the skinny on the book, please refer to the review posted here on 2/5/2016 by PepsiJedi. It's accurate and superb. I felt his pain!So, enjoy the first three books in the series. Don't waste your money on the fourth. I cannot stress this enough, if you liked the character of Amanda Garrett in the previous three books DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES READ THIS BOOK!There is NO Fourth book!!The third book is the last in the series!!!This book totally destroys the character built over the previous three books, utterly rendering her into something she never had been and is so radically off kilter from the established char over the previous series that it literally made me ill.In the previous 3 books Amanda Garrett was built up to be a modern day hero and Naval Officer. Unorthodox, brilliant, capable and so good at what she does that she's carved out a name for herself in a 'Mans' Navy, that... our Navy still is. Yes she's a woman. In the previous books she was not presented like Rambo, but a capable officer that 'is' a woman. That was well established.In this ... travesty, that is all thrown away.Here we find Amanda in command of an entire task force. The Duke is back (Updated and redesginated as a Cruiser now.) A huge hovorcraft carrier ship. Air elements the works. Ok. That's fine. She went from the Duke in the first two, to the Hovorcraft task force command, this one adds them both together and gets them moving off that stable platform they were on in the third book.They get sent to hunt down a Pirate that stole a recovered Satellite. Ok.. Sure thing. Tons of islands down there. Pirate is a 'Pirate king'. So lots of things could happen.What happens? Amanda sees him and falls instantly head over heels, mind numbingly stupid, in lust. Just. BOOM, Out of nowhere. Uncontrollably in lust for this rich Multimillionaire Pirate. Who runs Bugi pirates and kills people all the time. Preys on the sea which she's dedicated 38 years of her life to protecting, her entire history and BOOM. She just goes googly eyed and stupid.Now they know this is the guy, but they need to 'prove' it's the guy and find the satellite.. So they go to a party at his island and that's when she gets hit between the eyes with a stupid stick.So much so that.... when he invites her out to his place ALONE the next day, she agrees to go. Her pal Chris.. tells her it's a bad idea. She goes anyway. Now.. it's not like she snuck out after dark. Eddie Mac, the Admiral is there in person (And has fallen in love with her himself!!)) and lets her go. Hiro the captain of the Duke lets her go. The new captain (Some fat dude I forget his name) of the new larger ship let her go.Noone other than Chris think's it's a bad idea for the TACBOSS of the entire taskforce to go hang out at the Pirate king's house alone. Sure.. what's the worst that could happen?Well he gets her there and in about 10 minutes he 'tricks' her into taking a bath... because.. you know the flight out to the island was hot and it's traditional to bathe there before you eat lunch...... riiight... I saw something fishy right then. So when she comes out of the bath of course the PIRATE KING has stolen her clothes and has silky night wear for her to wear. She basically goes "Oh that scamp!" and gets dressed in it and goes out to have lunch with him. He feeds her exotic fruit including one he tells her is a POWERFUL APHRODISIAC ha ha ha ha ha.Oh but he has to take a meeting. Please go down to the private beach. Swim. I own the island and you'll have it all to your self."But I didn't bring a suit""Oh but you don't need one"ha ha ha ha.Oh ok I'll lone you one.So.. she goes and puts on the suit that fits her because the Pirate king has intelligence agency's all over the planet... and goes to the "perfect beach of her dreams" and what's she do.. this Taskforce commander that's supposedly on a recon mission against a killer pirate that has killed 100s and what not? Well... of course.. if she DOESN"T swim naked then he's won, as she's backed down from the dare... so she takes off the suit and goes out to swim naked! La de da! And of course.. as you all can guess... the Pirate pulling a play out of a 13 year old locker room. Steals her clothes when she's in the water. When she gets back she's shocked. SHOCKED I TELL YOU! As if he didn't steal her clothes like an hour before!??! He's there and checking her out but she can't cover up her hot body because that would let him win.Oh... oh what now?? She yells at him in rage demanding her clothes and to be taken back to her Naval ships? Angry that he would do such a thing to her, the career Naval Officer, Holder of TWO NAvy Crosses now, Destroyer Driver, TackBoss of the entire task force?NO.She just goes 'Oh well. he's really hot!" and screws him for hours and hours on the beach. The guy even waxes poetic about it once they're done and laying on the sand. About how she wanted him so badly and how she had to lose to him. *Gags*The character established over the previous three books never would have fallen for the FIRST dupe of the clothes. Much less two. Much less just shrug and screw her new mortal enemy for hours and hours.Then she heads back to her task force and.. they're still trying to hunt the guy down, get their proof and find the satellite. Chris figures it out and talks to her. instead of being like "WHOAA!! You're my best friend you gotta pull your head out of the clouds!! WAKE UP!!" She tries to demand details on sex positions out of Amanda (BTW Chris has decided to screw some local guy too, but that's not 100% out of character for her, but it's still tacked on and out of nowhere.) Yeah.. instead of trying to pull her friend back, and get things backo n track she's all "You did it Stallion and mare style huh? he seems the type!"HORRIBLE.. and I'm no prude. I'm not against sex. It's just that this is 100% out of character for the character and just so so so so contrived and stupid!! UTTERLY STUPID, in every way.So she tries to act like nothing happened but of course.. they've got to go to another party before they leave. What happens? Of course the Pirate king Kidnaps her and steals her away from under ALLLLLLLLLLL The technology of the task force and the Duke Combined.OOPS.So now he's her captive and on one hand she's like "Oh noes! I must destroy him!" but... nope... She keeps right on screwing him. Every night. her resistance is non existent. She's plotting and trying to help her group to find her but just figures. :"What the hell he's really good in bed" so she screws him every night. She's not even conflicted about it. She just plays it off, while at the same time sorta is trying to do Recon. Like 'Hey... I'm going to spy.. and screw this guy's brains out for hours and hours each night" (And that's not an exaggeration. It's stipulated in the book that their love making is radically intense and goes on for hours and hours)So eventually Eddie Mac and the crew come to get her. Big Rescue operation, she's holding out down a tunnel and the Pirate king goes to talk to her.After alllllllllllllll this. After the utter betrayal of the beloved Character. Does she shoot him? Oh no. She can't. Oh Whoa!! Then she 'THINKS" she did but nope.. With all the marines there, the task force. Both super ships with ALLL Their technology, the Pirate king just.. slips out in the dark, out from under the noses of like 500 people and the most advanced tech in the world.Zip.So even after all that and the utter betrayal of the character you're not even rewarded with the bad guy getting caught. he gets away.And not just away but away100% clean and got to keep like $350,000,000, to KEEP Doing what he was doing anyway.*Shakes head* In between the CRAP I detailed above there's some good points. I wish I was exaggerating on this. If anything I'm playing it down. I got about half way into the book last night and the stupid started piling up.. I read through the night, for the satisfaction of the Pirate King dieing at the end... not only did he not die... not only did he get away but Amanda's stupidity grows and grows and grows and she repeatedly sleeps with the guy over and over like some drunken prom date.The assassination of the character's CHARACTER was revolting. You'll feel like she cheated on YOU! (And lets not even get into she just.. hand waved off Arkady and her former love as "Ehh... no time for that" while she can screw the killer international pirate that's killed her people, innocent sailors, and bodily kidnaps her.Nor is it some sort of Stockholm Syndrome. That angle wasn't touched on at all. It was just 'Oh. tee hee... He's hot. I must go to his house ALLLLLLLLLLLL ALONE!" and everyone's like "DUr hur. have fun" and once there. "Tee hee. he stole my clothes..... Oh tee hee. I'll go swimming naked... Oh tee hee.. he stole my clothes again what ever will I do? I know. I'll betray everything my life has been about for 38 years and just screw him like a horny bunny, and then bgo home.. do some stuff then go to another party with him. Get kidnapped and screw him every night for the next week while he uses me as a 'hostage'.The book was revolting.Not for 'the sex' but for how it's foisted in there. With out reason. The main character of the series, who was a hero and very human, just throws it all over board for a hot pirate king, and not just once in a moment of stupidity, but repeatedly repeatedly repeatedly.Even on the day the attack happens, she wakes up, KNOWING that the rescue is going to come that day. That she needs to be Ready for hte Rescue.. what's she do? Oh she wakes up the pirate king for one more roll in the hay before 100s of people put their lives on the line to save her, many dieing to save her. What's she doing? Screwing the Pirate's brains out before they get there.... hundreds of thousands of dollars in ordinance. dozens of US troops dieing, etc, and she's getting laid one last quick time before the rescue gets there....Do not read this book if you liked the previous three...And be warned.. the Author up and DIED... So not only is this travesty this bad.. but no more books in the series will ever be written. This is how it ends. The hero of the series reduced to a horny idiot screwing her enemies.
